Anthony Biancoviso
Ceramic Artist

Anthony has been making pottery for over 30 years.  He has taken numerous workshops from
prominent master potters throughout the country, including Betty Woodman, Peter Voulkos,
and Karen Karnes.  His work has been shown in numerous local galleries, juried art exhibitions
and craft shows. For eight years, he taught pottery at 78th Street Pottery in New York City.
Anthony is a member of the Potters of Sullivan County and is a founding member of the
Barryville Area Arts Association.

Anthony specializes in the ancient technique of low-fired pottery, but with an emphasis on
contemporary aesthetics.  In addition to being visually arresting, his work is distinctively
sculptural in form, and highly sensual and tactile.  Each piece is wheel-thrown, placed in a small
wood burning kiln, then smoke fired to a low temperature — an ancient technique that
accentuates the soft, open, and natural qualities of earthenware clay. Pots that are shiny, very
smooth, and very pleasurable to touch have been brushed with multiple layers of fine clay slip
(Terra Sigillata), and then hand-burnished, a process used by Southwestern Native American
potters.  The unique abstract designs and interesting color combinations that appear on some
pots is created by placing minerals and organic materials around the pieces in the kiln.
The earth, water, air and fire determine the stunning unique and unpredictable results.
