Ron Coldon and Pat Shearer
Sign Painting, Carving & Design; Functional Slate Artworks

Husband and wife creative team Ron Coldon and Pat Shearer live in Yulan, NY, where they share
a studio in their newly renovated 1950’s era home, and bring their combined talents and
collaborative creative process to their individual crafts. 

Ron has been painting signs since the 70's.  After attending college in Miami he worked in a few
custom woodworking and furniture shops through the early 80's.  He eventually went to work for
a New York daily newspaper as a computer graphic artist and later worked as an art director for
a group of weekly papers and an in-house advertising agency.  His 17 years working in the
publishing industry still left him wanting to work with his hands again, so Ron recently opened
"Signs & Designs", painting and carving both in the shop and at local shows.  "While the theory
of advertising is similar for both publishing and signage, I have always enjoyed making a
product. Whether it was a carved sign or a lettered truck, I enjoy standing back and being proud
of my work". Ron works for homeowners as well as the commercial trade.  More of Ron’s work

Pat's first love has been restoring historic homes, but her work has recently taken on a smaller
scale.  "While I was redoing a slate fireplace a few years ago, I fell in love with the medium of
slate, the different textures and colors.  The ideas just kept coming, and the next thing I knew, I
was making slate frames and clocks.  The work is always an evolution and I have recently added
other elements like copper tubing and 24K gold leaf."  The interesting thing about Pat's work is
how it fits into nearly any decor, from contemporary to rustic.  Pat’s work is mostly for the
residential customer via local shows such as Bethel Harvest Festival, but her large chalkboards
have found their way into restaurants and B&Bs.
