Judy Kirtley
Photography

A professional photographer since 1985, Judy Kirtley specializes in theatrical arts, called upon
by musicians, actors, and writers.  She brings to her work well over three decades of broad
performance experience in the concert, cabaret, opera and jazz fields, and draws on her
knowledge of timing, breathing, phrasing and movement to capture her subjects’ individuality.

Many of her images have appeared in such publications as The New York Times, The NY Post,
String Player Magazine, Double Bassist, The NY Daily News, Back Stage, The L.A. Bulletin,
Jazz Times, Down Beat and Fifth Avenue Christmas and displayed in front of Lincoln Center’s
Avery Fisher Hall.  She photographs recording sessions for musical talents like Steve Kuhn,
Catherine Dupuis, Dina Blade, Marvin Stamm and Bill Mays.  Record companies, too,
commission her work.  Recent projects have involved the New City, Arbors, GoFour, and
Palmetto record labels.

Since 2001, as the official photographer for the International Society of Bassists’ bi-annual
conventions, that brings together for 7 days nearly 1000 of the world’s best double bassists,
she shoots the week’s public final concerts.  For nine years, she was official photographer for
a show that grew to become a unique New York Christmas event:  The Jazz Nativity.

Her visual interests extend well beyond the performing arts to corporate clients including
International Paper, Sony and law firms like Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker.  For such clients, she captures images of seminars, receptions, private parties and other special events,
as well as executive portraiture.

With an extensive library of stock and travel images – both color slides and b&w – Judy Kirtley’s
collection represents diverse geographic regions throughout the United States, exotic locales in
Mexico, the Caribbean, and France, and an abundant and unusual detail study of New York.  She
is expanding her fine art portfolio with black & white images she photographs, prints on textured
papers, and hand paints in unusual and unexpected ways.

Judy works with 35mm, 2-1/4” (medium) and 4”x5” (large) film formats. She also uses digital
equipment.
