Lisa Strier
Mixed Media Artist

I’ve been salvaging since I was a kid, jamming my desk with objects reclaimed from Brooklyn
streets or the dreaded incinerator chute. It drove my meticulous Mom crazy when the “junk”
invaded my dresser drawers, brazenly cozy with my discreet socks and underwear.  My studio
and stockpile still overwhelm my practical living spaces.

My art is about three things: texture, composition and historical/archetypal resonance.

The sources for my materials vary wildly - dog food cans, flea market photographs and
magazines, junked office machine guts, construction dumpsters, the woods, the river and
parking lots.  The impressionistic qualities of their color, form and texture result from exposure
to time and the elements.  Found photographs, orphaned from their families, portray familiar
expressions and body language. I liberate text from its original content in old magazines and
offer it to current events.

Potential for a sublime moment exists in the commonplace; I attempt to rescue these derelict
and abandoned ‘possibilities’ from being overlooked by piecing them together in a transformed
aesthetic.  Themes for my multi-panel, mixed media paintings are motivated by societal, political
and gender conflicts.

The jewelry I create is inspired by my collage of found materials, and by the people who wear
them.  My amulets encourage confidence and protect against negative energy.  With your
personal response to a few vital questions (visit blog), I will create an amulet designed for your
purpose.

I have a BFA, 1983, from The Cooper Union, NY.  I settled in Pike County in 1985, becoming an
urban/rural remix, raising my daughter and collecting diverse career experiences- I’ve been a
carpenter building log homes for the past 7 years.  I recently became an Adjunct Professor,
teaching art history and graphic design at Sussex County Community College, Newton, NJ.

My work has been represented in group exhibits, solo shows, the NY Times, regional newspapers and magazines.
